Mr. Maguire is the former librarian of Bremen Library.

Biography

Mr. Maguire was the librarian of Bremen Library in the town of Bremen.

The Librarians first encountered Mr. Maguire in the Bremen Library while looking for the Libris Fabula, a powerful storybook that could turn people's lives into fairy tales, with potentially fatal effects.

He complained a bit about the local kids not appreciating the classics, being too focused on Katniss Everdeen or Artemis Fowl. Jacob Stone noticed a number of rare old books, and Mr. Maguire told them that he had been given the book collection of Thompson Deter, a collector of arcane and mystic texts who had died a few weeks before. When the Librarians offered to help him catalogue Mr. Deter's collection, he politely declined, saying he had a "sacred duty" to document the books before he could expose them to anyone else.

Later, in the hospital, Ezekiel Jones realized that Mr. Maguire was the one using the Libris Fabula. He assumed at first that the librarian was unaware of the book's magical powers, but Mr. Maguire revealed that he was using the book intentionally. When he had read from the book to the local children, he'd realized that the book drained the life force of those listening to the story, but gave strength to the person reading the book. Bitter at growing old and feeling that he'd given his life to the town only to be forgotten, Mr. Maguire started using the book's powers to drain Jamie Heyer. He brought the Libris Fabula with him to read to Jamie in the hospital, nearly killing her in the process. He then used the power of the book to turn the local Sheriff and football team into wolves, sending them to kill the other Librarians before they could retrieve the book.

The Libris Fabula gave Mr. Maguire magical strength, and Ezekiel wasn't able to grab the book from him by force. However, the book had worked both Ezekiel and Jamie into the fairy tale tropes, and as the Jack, Ezekiel was able to use a magical coin to paralyze Mr. Maguire. When Ezekiel pulled the book from Mr. Maguire's hands and gave it to Jamie, Mr. Maguire was sucked into the book, and was later revealed to be trapped within its pages.

• Mr. Maguire was played by René Auberjonois, best known for playing Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Jonathan Frakes, who directed "And the Fables of Doom", appeared in one episode of Deep Space Nine with René Auberjonois and directed three others.
